Are you tired of a disorganized closet? If so, it might be time to consider organizing it once and for all. In this blog post, we’ll help you choose the best way to organize your closet and we’ll show you how to do it.

Organize your closet by type

This method works best for those who have lots of clothes.

This is also the most common way you’ll see closets organized and it is the one we use most often when organizing professionally.

HERE’S HOW TO ORGANIZE BY TYPE:

Step 1. Separate your clothing into categories such as:

  • Tanks
  • tees
  • shirts
  • blouses
  • sweaters
  • vests
  • blazers
  • jackets
  • skirts
  • shorts
  • pants
  • jeans
  • leggings
  • dresses

Step 2. Categorize even more.

To take your organization by type to the next level, you can further subdivide items by style and color.

For example, within the category of tees, you might group sleeveless tops together, followed by short-sleeved, 3/4-sleeved, and long-sleeved tops.

Then, within each sleeve length group, you can organize the items by color, creating a rainbow effect. But remember, first by type and then by color within type category.

This not only looks visually appealing but also makes it easy to find the shirt you’re looking for, no matter what the occasion. The same method can be applied to other categories such as pants, skirts, and dresses.

Step 3. Designate specific areas of your closet for each category.

What goes where will greatly depend on the system you have in your closet. As a general rule, we think hanging most of the clothes is best because it won’t be wrinkly when you are ready to wear it. And it is also easier the hang everything rather than fold it nicely.

By following this method, you can create a well-organized closet that maximizes your storage space and minimizes clutter.

Organize your closet by outfit

This method works best for those who want to always look good without thinking about it every day.

This is also my favourite one and the way I organize my clothes.

You’ll want to hang most of your clothes and fold only some basic layers, pyjamas and sweats. Everything else will be hung, even jeans.

By grouping items that go well together and creating pre-made outfits, you can streamline your morning routine and always look put-together. This approach is especially helpful for those with busy schedules or who simply prefer not to spend a lot of time thinking about what to wear.

Think of a boutique store, and how they always hang the items that create an outfit together.

HERE’S HOW TO ORGANIZE BY OUTFIT:

Step 1. Identify the outfits you wear frequently.

Go through your closet and select the outfits you wear often. These could be outfits you wear to work, on weekends, or to special events. Hang those outfits together.

Step 2. Now let’s create outfits with clothes that you rarely wear.

Go to Pinterest and type in the name of the item you want to create an outfit with, for example, “navy blazer outfits”. Look for ideas and create new outfits with this item.

When you go through this process, you may realize that you have some items that you never wear because they don’t go with anything. Let go of those.

This method is more time-consuming to initially organize your closet but will save time every day when you’ll be getting dressed.

Organize your closet by occasion

This method works best for those who have a dress code at work, attend lots of formal events, professional athletes.

Sometimes when we organize, clients have lots of different categories of clothes that are specific to certain events and occasions, and we don’t want to mix them.

HERE’S HOW TO ORGANIZE BY OCCASION:

Step 1. Sort your clothes by occasion.

Start by separating your clothing items into categories based on the occasion. For example, you can create categories such as work clothes, casual clothes, formal wear, and athletic wear.

Step 2. Arrange your items within each category.

Once you’ve sorted your clothing items by occasion, organize them further. Your casual clothes by type and your work clothes by outfit. Check the sections above to see how to do that.

Step 3. Designate a specific area for each category.

Depending on the amount of space in your closet, designate a specific area for each category of clothing. This can be a separate section or a specific shelf or rack for each category.

To make it easier to find what you need, consider using different coloured hangers for each category or attach labels to each item with the occasion it’s appropriate for.

Organize your closet by season

This method works best for those who live in a climate with all four seasons and have a small closet.

Organizing clothes by season is a great way to maximize your closet space and keep your wardrobe relevant to the weather outside.

HERE’S HOW TO ORGANIZE BY SEASON:

Step 1. Start by taking all the clothes out of your closet and categorize them by season.

Separate summer dresses from winter dresses, light spring sweaters from heavy fall sweaters.

Step 2. Store the clothes that are not in season in a separate area of your closet or in a storage bin.

This will help to free up space in your closet for the clothes you will be wearing in the current season.

Step 3. Next, organize your current season’s clothes.

Choose to organize it with one of the methods mentioned above, by type or outfit.

Step 4. As the season changes, you can swap out the clothes that are no longer in season for the ones that are.

For example, as winter approaches, take out the winter clothes from storage and put away the summer clothes. This will help you to stay organized and make sure you always have the right clothes for the season.

Takeaways:

  1. Choose the organizing method that works best for your lifestyle and preferences.
  2. Hang items by type, such as shirts, pants, dresses, and skirts, and further divide them by style and color for easier access and matching.
  3. Organize clothes by outfit to save time and effort when getting dressed every day.
  4. Group clothes by occasion, such as work, casual, formal, or athletic wear, to have a clearer idea of what you have and what you need for each purpose.
  5. Store out-of-season clothes to save space and keep your closet organized.
